Drives drives drives

So the last two weeks have consisted of a lot of drives so I could get used to the reserve and the radio before our volunteers arrived and I started doing drives alone.

I did my first solo drive last Tuesday and managed to find most of the animals, the two cheetah boys were hiding but I find them in the afternoon. It was both exciting and scary being out on my own, but have done a few more solo drives now, and am more comfortable.

Saturday night out volunteers arrived, and Sunday night I took half of them out in their first drive-not a whole lot was seen but we picked up signal for the female lion and had a great sighting of elephant.

Today has been fairly miserable, raining and for here cold, I have had a fleece Olin most of the day-mind you is is probably not actually that cold-probably in the low 20's.

Next week I am off, and hope to get to kruger for a couple of days-where else do you go when you live on a game reserve but a much larger version!!!

Also did a day's tracking, and got to see some tracks I didn't see in my last tracking course-terrapins, wasps, crocodile, lizards.

Hi Rhiannon! what do the volunteers do? Once when leaving Kruger park I was asked if I had seen everything,I answered yes but no Tigers! HE smiled and replied 'perhaps next time'! I would have made him foreign minister! All the best from Geoff!

Dear Rhiannon 18/1/2013

Your MUM SAID YOU WERE A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED THAT PEOPLE HADN'T been replying to any of your blogs so I thought I would as I always enjoy both your photos, especially the ones of Cheetahs as they are my favourite cat and your info as well. Love things that move fast and they are awesome. You are so lucky to have such intimate contact with them and all the other animals as well. All the cats are marvellous and I admire the tiger and leopard as well as the smaller cats. I went to your Dad's 60th and it was very good to catch up with many people there. Greg's brother is a giant isn't he. I had forgotten what a big family Greg has as well but had a good chat with many. I have been pretty sick with a particularly nasty type of pneumonia so life has been pretty terrible for over three months now but I will hopefully survive it. Still have issues with it but am trying to be sensible about it although our hot summer isn't helping. On the wild life front not quite the level of yourself but we have two strange creatures which have very strange calls, one a bird which is I think is of the nightjar family but even the Bird Observers Club couldn’t absolutely identify it so that is unresolved but a really weird call. The other one came up to our balcony door one night and we couldn't work it out. It was so weird but it ended up being Peron's tree frog and it has been around for some three months now although the last two weeks haven't heard him or her as it is so dry. There are two of them as we hear them call each other. No decent rain for over a month which is exceptional for Melbourne as you would well know. Anyway keep up the good work and maintain your spirit. I think you are terrific. I will keep a watch more frequently in future. On a sad note I did read about the rhino poaching and it is very depressing. Mankind can be such shits sometimes and the use of the horns is so stupid, even although I know the people are so desperate in parts of Africa. We have got find a way of providing an alternate to slaughtering these latter day dinosaurs.
